Josh and I did some more “exploring” in the neighborhood and stumbled upon a karaoke place by accident.
This weekend is “Lunar New Year” so a lot of bars and restaurants close for the weekend. We wanted to check out the “night life” around town but we definitely picked a bad time to do this. We thought we heard music coming from a bar on the 6th floor of one of the buildings so we went inside to see if we could find it.
Once we were inside the building we saw a big sign that had a picture of a girl with a microphone and some musical notes coming from her mouth. We thought it might be karaoke so we decided to go to the second floor to check it out.
It wasn’t a karaoke bar but more of a hallway of rooms. You rent the room by the hour. There were all different rates, I wasn’t sure what the difference was. I told the man behind the counter that it was our first time and he gave us a rate of $27.00/ hr. I wasn’t trying to get a deal, just trying to figure out the pricing, (I think $30.00 /hr.was the actual rate).
So he brought us to the room and it had a table with seating all around it, kind of like a booth in a restaurant. There is a huge screen, disco style lighting and a few tambourines on the table. He gave us two books and closed the door when he left (it’s semi-private).
There was a decent selection of ”English” songs. Josh ran the controls. I found an Evanescence song right away Call Me When You’re Sober. It has been a long time since I have done any singing and I thought it was pretty rough, but it scored me at 100%. (I have not figured out the scoring feature, it seemed pretty random).
I had a blast though. Josh even jumped in and performed a few songs with me.
We were both sober too which is pretty funny. I usually have to have a few drinks before getting up on stage at a karaoke bar to perform. I was also able to sing a few “Broadway” tunes from Phantom of the Opera, which I also wouldn’t normally do at a karaoke bar since it’s not exactly a “crowd pleaser”.
Time just flew by. One of the last songs I did was Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson, and I know I nailed it. So we had four minutes left and I picked Unchained Melody since that was the song Josh and I danced our first dance to at our wedding. In the middle of the song Josh looked at the timer in the upper right hand corner and it went up to 20 minutes. So they added more time to the timer. I am not sure why they did this, I like to think they liked our singing (lol) but it’s hard to guess what was going on.
We couldn’t stay – we had to do some last minute grocery shopping before all the stored shut down for the weekend. When we went to pay they said “we gave you more time”. We said “thanks, we saw that, but we really have to go.” ;(
The karaoke place is my FAVORITE attraction in South Korea right now. It is in walking distance and the room was big enough to entertain a small group of people.

hey, just started reading your blog, one of my good friends is korean and we go to the same type of karaoke place in manhattan 32nd & broadway “korean town” i <3 it! u also need to go to a korean spa they are great, they really know how to give a body scrub and massage, the only thing is they are usually naked, took me some time to get used too but its all good
looks like your having fun,
sara
Naked body scrubs .. that sounds intimidating. I like the karaoke in a room but I kind of miss getting up on stage and performing.
